Bernards Township is located in northern Somerset County. It is bordered by the town of Bernardsville to the north, Peapack and Gladstone, Far Hills, and Bedminster to the west, Bridgewater and Warren to the south and Morris County to the east. The town has remained heavily rural despite considerable housing construction in recent years. Scherman-Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary is well maintained and has many marked trails traversing the Sanctuary. The trails range in length from 0.3 miles to 1.3 miles and pass through upland deciduous forest, fields, woodland and the floodplain along the headwaters of the Passaic River. The Sanctuary is home to more than 60 species of nesting birds and over 175 species have been sighted at the Sanctuary. The Sanctuary hours are Tuesday through Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., Sundays from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. (closed on Mondays and Holidays). The trails are open seven days a week to 5 p.m. To use the trails when the Sanctuary is closed, park in the lower parking lot (the Scherman lot) on Hardscrabble Road, Bernardsville.
The Cross Estate Gardens in nearby Bernardsvile comprise formal and native gardens, a wisteria-covered pergola, and a mountain laurel allee. The Cross Estate is open from dawn to dusk. Parking is free, and there are no entry fees.
The Brick Academy, in nearby Basking Ridge, houses a museum of local history on its main floor. Featured exhibits include one on early education and a display of artifacts from Lord Stirling’s plantation. The lower floor of the Brick Academy contains a Research Room and the third floor is awaiting restoration. The museum is open Sundays from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. except July and August and holidays.
