Sightseeing in Hackettstown, New Jersey
The Centenary Collegiate Institute or, as it is familiarly known, the Seminary, was erected between 1869 and 1874. The firms of Clawson & Hazen and the Stryker Brothers were contracted to construct the building. The Reverend George H. Whitney, D. D., was elected its first president. He served in that capacity from 1869 until 1895. On October 31, 1899, the massive structure burned to the ground, but was rebuilt over two years at a cost of $300,000 and reopened in 1901. This school was a college preparatory school for both sexes until 1910 and today it is a school for girls only. Rev. Jonathan M. Meeker, PhD., DD, is its current president.
The Hackettstown Historical Society Museum is located at 106 Church Street and is home to over thirteen thousand items in its collection of genealogy files, local artifacts and memorabilia. The museum and its collections are maintained by a group of dedicated volunteers. The seven-room house that became the museum formerly belonged to the prominent Plate family. In addition to local artifacts, the museum has an extensive archival collection and a well-lit room with a large table where research can be done. The museum is open every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 pm, and trained personnel are there at these times. Membership in the society is available for only $10 a year with a special student rate of $2 a year, and the Society welcomes guests at no charge.
