The Morris Canal. This canal, once a thriving New Jersey waterway, ran through the township. Both Port Murray and Rockport were on the canal and served its users. The canal was intended primarily to bring coal from the Lehigh Valley mines in Pennsylvania to the industries of northern New Jersey and on to the Hudson River. Traces of the canal and the ruins of some associated locks, inclined planes and buildings can be found with some imaginative searching.
